In the Past

There was a time, a lifetime ago,

when we kids could walk alone in the dark,

under the umbrella of towering Elm trees,

on the south side of the lake,

nothing to fear, nothing at all.

Those elm trees are long gone, that Dutch disease, you know.

But, there are pine trees and firs and maples, even birches,

the ones we planted before we knew the elms would go.

We were not worried about the future when we did that.

We just put them in the ground,

bought hammocks and rope, calmly waited.

Nothing to worry about. Nothing at all.
