Learning

Sitting in the backyard on a May gray day,
feeling the eyes of Max and Reesie,
taking a break from their morning play,
looking out the window, enjoying cat t.v..
Sitting doing nothing, not thinking too much,
learning patience, quieting my monkey mind,
waiting for the tomatoes to ripen,
waiting for the cactus to flower,
waiting for the birds to sing,
thinking about the difference between
being quiet and finding silence,
remembering to pray when things are
going well.

Faith

I have an old,
old man’s body,
but I know,
know this:
there’s a happy,
happy child, deep,
deep in my heart.
Now you might say how,
how can I be so,
so sure, when I can’t,
can’t see it,
not even with the best,
best mirror.
Well, I might just answer
that I know,
know this in the same,
same way I know
there’s an Uncaused
Cause.
That’s all.

2015 Natal Day

2015 Natal Day

The calendar is never wrong.
It’s time for another birthday song.
You’re still youthful, far as I can see,
as young as you will ever be.
So let your inner child
go crazy, running wild.
Let’s share a perfect day,
everything going your way.
You’re still in your prime,
and there’s no better time
for love, joy and peace,
may they never cease.
So one big smile
for a big while,
welcome a new year
of birthday cheer.
Whatever time can do
looks fabulous on you.

Lost Time

Why yes, I am just fine,
no I haven’t lost my mind,
but this morning’s time will bide,
dry and comfy here inside.

For months we’ve been imploring
for rain, and now it’s pouring,
so in my living room’s safe mooring
I’ll be reading, writing, snoring.

We live in the nation’s Finest City,
so it isn’t quite a pity,
that to our couch we tether
while we get a little weather.

Peace Poems...No Great Loss

"Damn, and just when I was starting to get it!"
(Edgar Degas, on his deathbed)

Looking for Enlightenment

One need not suffer.
Loss is forever a choice.
The wise opt for peace.

Passage

On life’s final day
comes an explosion of light.
Be at peace with it.

Emergency

Elders learn by fall
that summer’s losses soon end.
Peace comes with patience.

Everybody Says "Heaven", Nobody Says "Let Me Die"

No dark without light.
No seasons without changes.
No hope without peace.

Cold Is Not Separate From Heat

Life is as it is.
No need to create what’s lost.
Peace is snow and sun.

Smarter Than Me

There’s a cunning little mouse
living on my tomato plant,
and I try so hard to catch that louse,
but it seems I simply can’t.
I’ve tried all kinds of traps and bait,
but he tells the others to go ahead, please.
he tells them he’s inclined to wait,
knows it’s the second mouse who gets the cheese.
