Adorno
Not their first love,
not by a long shot,
maybe seventh,
possibly their eighth,
definitely their last,
a forever home indeed,
this one with a much shorter past.
It’s the estate sale one,
before the move to
the senior site, actually
the super senior site, right?
Hopefully not the toes up house,
what will they keep,
what will they take?
At this age, what new memories
could they possibly make?
Who will adopt the plants,
the cacti, succulents and such,
now grown old like them,
daily care become a tad too much.
Once more, new ones will arrive,
only my fifth in fifty years,
perhaps this time with children,
until they leave as well,
leaving me to my tears.
I don’t plan on retiring,
that’s not what I’m built for.
That’s why there’s a welcome mat
at the front door.
